“Pragmatic Thinking & Learning” by Andy Hunt

I just finished reading Andy Hunt’s new book “Pragmatic Thinking & Learning” . Andy’s suggestions are truly pragmatic – they are useful and applicable. The book addresses surprising aspects of how brains work and how to improve learning and thinking skills. Andy brushes on concepts such as the Dreyfus Model, right/left brain, setting SMART objectives, learning deliberately, Mind Maps, GTD, how to manage focus, etc.

This book is not just for folks in the software engineering world. If you are a knowledge worker, you should read this book.

Personally, the most striking trivia was: The number of bugs programmers introduce into programs has remained constant for the past foryt years. Despite advances in programming languages, techniques, project methodologies, and so on, the defect density has reamined farily constant.

Sankt Nikolaus

True to a Swiss tradition, we baked ‘Gritibaenz’ today. Sankt Nikolaus is the patron saint of my hometown. This day always makes me smile as it reminds me of my childhood and how Sankt Nikolaus would visit our house, bring mandarines, nuts and gingerbread in his huge bag, and read from his big golden book about who was a good kid and who was a bad kid.
