The priority list – What should you do next?

Some reflective thoughts about your priority list from Seth Godin.

Great, Great, Great

What’s left of Apple’s keynote when reduced to adjectives……

I found this interesting article on ‘The Tagesanzeiger’.

CNN: Just imagine: City visions

This is about two architects (Ken Yeang and Ross Lovegrove) envisioning and designing ‘green’ buildings and cities.

About Determination

Truly insightful thoughts about The Anatomy of Determination from Paul Graham.

The Passionate Programmer

The Passionate Programmer – Creating a Remarkable Career in Software Development – from Chad Fowler is another excellent book from The Pragmatic Bookshelf series. If you are a developer you must read this book. It is the second edition of the book originally titled ‘My Job Went to India (And All I Got Was This Lousy Book): 52 Ways to Save Your Job’. I read the original book a few years back, but I was happy to learn that Chad released this new edition with a slightly different focus. This edition is more about career development and how to create a remarkable career. It’s less about how not to loose your job. I resonate with concepts such as ‘Daily Hit’, ‘How Good a Job Can I Do Today’, ‘Learn to Love Maintenance’ and many more. I also liked the new part about how you can market yourself. Chad talked a lot on how important the marketing and business side of our profession is and how you can act on these topics.

Even if you are not a developer it will give you many ideas on career development.

Like all of the ‘pragmatic’ books you can work through this book during a weekend. It’s a fun weekend read -:). For me it was Labor Day Weekend.

Seth Godin’s ‘Tribes’

I highly recommend Seth Godin’s book ‘Tribes – We need you to lead us’. It’s an uplifting book about leadership and how this time needs people with passion. The book is short and you probably heard most of the ideas before, but it is written very well and it’s an inspiring read.

Rancho San Antonio

I went for a hike in one of my most favorite regional parks of the Bay Area. It was a hot day and therefore it was quite in the park. The park is popular for local runners. On a weekend you have to get to the park way before the gates open to get a parking spot.

Eileen McDargh

I took the opportunity to attend a speech by Eileen McDargh. OWL (Oracle Women’s Leadership) is a program which aims to create opportunities that support, educate and empower the current and future generations of women leaders at Oracle. Eileen was invited to give the closing keynote at the annual HQ event. She talked about how to stay resilient in this changing and troubling time. If you ever get the chance to see her talk life – take it! Eileen is funny and engages everybody in the audience. I especially resonated with her passion for hiking mountains -:). After the talk I went home to order ‘Gifts from the mountain‘ . The book is a gem with the inspiring text and the beautiful watercolor paintings.
